{"id":486,"date":"2016-07-22T22:33:02","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T21:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pilatesfitness.co.uk\/blog\/?p=486"},"modified":"2016-07-22T22:42:47","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T21:42:47","slug":"why-artificial-sweeteners-are-bad-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pilatesfitness.co.uk\/blog\/?p=486","title":{"rendered":"Why Artificial Sweeteners Are BAD For You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sugar is Bad but Artificial Sweeteners are WORSE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pilatesfitness.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sweeteners.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-487\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-487\" src=\"http:\/\/pilatesfitness.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sweeteners.jpg\" alt=\"sweeteners\" width=\"310\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pilatesfitness.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sweeteners.jpg 310w, https:\/\/pilatesfitness.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/sweeteners-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Animal studies suggest that artificial sweeteners may be addictive.\u00a0 A 2007 paper reports that, in studies of rats exposed to cocaine and then given a choice between intravenous cocaine or oral saccharine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17668074\" target=\"_blank\">most chose saccharin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1038\/oby.2008.284\/abstract;jsessionid=4FD5565601D88142CEFE6EE9822DA2C5.f04t02\" target=\"_blank\">2008 paper<\/a> in <em>Obesity<\/em> showed that those who used artificial sweeteners <strong>gained more weight<\/strong> over a seven- to eight-year period than those who did not.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/97\/3\/517.long\" target=\"_blank\">large study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/a> in 2013 which involved almost 70,000 women over 14 years found that subjects consuming sugar sweetened beverages were at an increased risk for becoming type 2 diabetics. Their risk was increased by around 34%. This was as expected and similar increases had been seen mostly in US populations for a while. What was interesting and perhaps unexpected was the finding that those women who chose to drink sugar-free, artificially-sweetened beverages experienced double an increase in risk for diabetes compared to the sugar group!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nature13793.html\" target=\"_blank\">A 2014 study<\/a> then showed that\u00a0that the reason people become less glucose tolerant when drinking artificially sweetened beverages is because consumption of artificial sweeteners causes profound changes in the gut bacteria (microbiota).<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, drinking sugar-free beverages is good advice.
